Design Standards and Regulations

Design standards have been a specialty of MAKERS since the early 1990s. Over this period, we have built a reputation for clear, implementable plans and regulatory documents that have produced demonstrable results in numerous Pacific Northwest communities. MAKERS has completed over 60 design guideline projects, including numerous award-winning efforts.

MAKERS works with stakeholders, staff, community members, and public officials to craft guidelines that balance predictability and strategic flexibility while meeting community design objectives. Most of our guidelines employ clear minimum standards with departure provisions that offer flexibility. Our clear graphics successfully illustrate acceptable and unacceptable development types.

Many of MAKERS’ design guideline concepts and images have been adopted as common practice in the field of urban design and are included as standard elements of many policy manuals.
